Wyatt McWilliams gets the Meritorious Service Decoration (Civil Division)

Our friend, Wyatt McWilliams, is being recognized for his incredible contribution to his community through his dedicated work with the Ottawa Food Bank.

According to the Governor General of Canada’s website the Meritorious Service Decoration (Civil Division) is, “given to recognize remarkable contributions in many different fields of endeavour, from advocacy initiatives and health care services, to research and humanitarian efforts.

“Past recipients have tackled poverty in their community, improved education opportunities for children in Canada and abroad, or raised awareness of important causes and issues.”

Wyatt helped spearhead the Ottawa Food Bank’s Food Aid Beef Program in 2005, and has been a vital player in the program and Food Aid Day ever since. Food Aid was initiated and created when international borders were closed to Canadian cattle due to Mad Cow Disease.  Wyatt’s idea was to gather the farming community, hold a fundraiser which would raise funds to purchase beef from local farmers who could no longer export beef, and donate the beef to the Ottawa Food Bank for distribution to people in need. To date, more than 800,000 lbs. of locally raised beef has been distributed to our emergency food program thanks to our Food Aid Program.

In past years, Wyatt has also been a participant, with his beautiful Clydesdale horses, in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, pulling a wagon to help collect food donations along the route.

We are honoured to have Wyatt McWilliams in our corner. Thank you for all you do for the Ottawa Food Bank, Wyatt.
