Canstruction raises 22,000 pounds of food!

From May 30th until June 4th, The Ottawa Regional Society of Architects together with the Society for Design Administration held their annual Canstruction event in support of the Ottawa Food Bank and National Hunger Awareness Day (May 31st). Teams of architects, engineers and other design professionals put their creativity to the test designing and building structures made entirely out of canned food items.

“Canstruction is such a creative team building event, and the food used in the structures is then donated to the Ottawa Food Bank,” says Peter Tilley, Executive Director of the Ottawa Food Bank. “It’s brilliant and a great initiative to recognize National Hunger Awareness Day.”

Structures were judged and awarded based on creativity, and in the end 22,000 pounds of food was raised by the participating teams and event organizers. A big thank you goes out to all who participated and event organizer Sonia Joanis.

The following groups below won awards for Best Meal, Juror’s Favourite and Public’s Favourite.

  • Architecture for Humanity – Best Meal
  • grc architects – Juror’s Favorite
  • Stantec & Lumilux – Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels and Public’s Favourite

“Canstruction is a national charity committed to ending hunger,” says event organizer Sonia Joanis. “We’re extremely proud to help the Ottawa Food Bank with its mission in this community.” Sonia also sends a special ‘shout out’ to the other teams who participated this year, including:

  • Smith Carter
  • IBI Group Architects
  • KWC Architects Inc.
  • CSV Architects
