NHL Goes Beyond Sports

The NHL has been nominated and shortlisted in two categories for the prestigious 2011 Beyond Sport Awards; their categories include Sports for Environment and the 2011 Federation of the Year. The successful placement on the shortlist for these two categories is due in large part to the success of the NHL Rock and Wrap It Up! Food Recovery Initiative.

Beyond Sport is a global organization that promotes and encourages the use of sports and sports federations to drive positive social change around the world.

The Food Recovery Initiative provides food for local meal programs and shelters at the end of games rather than throwing the left-over fresh food in the garbage. Throughout the 2010-11 season the NHL’s 30 participating clubs diverted 105 tons of food from the landfills and in turn giving more than 160,000 meals to those in need.

The Ottawa Food Bank wishes the NHL the best of luck with the awards, and we are so proud and gracious to be apart of this fantastic program. Thank you to the NHL and Scotiabank Place for their on-going support.

Award winners will be announced on the final two days of the Beyond Sport Summit taking place early December in Cape Town, South Africa. Stay tuned!
