Looking Ahead After the 2025 Federal Election

The 2025 Federal Election came at a critical time for Canadians. For the Ottawa Food Bank and our network of nearly 98 food programs, Ottawa’s food insecurity crisis remained top of mind. For over 40 years, we have witnessed the rise of food insecurity, with 2024 being a record-breaking year of food bank use.

Enough is enough. This election season, we came together with our network to launch the Capital Hunger, National Crisis campaign, highlighting that the food insecurity we see in Ottawa represents a nation in need of solutions that tackle the root causes of food insecurity and poverty.

As we welcome a new government to Parliament Hill, we remain steadfast in advocating for a healthier future for all. We encourage you to read, bookmark, and share the following resources we developed during the campaign:

  • Government of Canada’s Role: Explore how federal politics shapes food insecurity across Canada.
  • Candidate Questionnaire: See how Ottawa’s federal candidates responded to our questions about their plans to end food insecurity in the nation’s capital.
  • The Network in Your Riding: Find out where all 98 food programs in our network are located, showing that food insecurity is a capital crisis.
  • Engaging with Federal Candidates: We compiled questions that any resident in Ottawa, regardless of voting status, can ask their federal candidates—during or between elections.
  • Amplifying Our Voices: Hear from Cortenay Sarion, Team Lead of our equiTABLE Resident Action Group and our CEO Rachael Wilson on why federal politicians cannot ignore food insecurity.

Election season is over, but food insecurity remains a year-round priority for the Ottawa Food Bank. Alongside our network and community, we will keep advocating for a future where everyone in our communities has reliable access to the food they need and the income to afford it.
