Ottawa Summer Food Drive Raises 90,000 lbs. of Food

Before school is out, students across 16 Ottawa-Carleton District School Board schools came together with Khalsa Aid Canada for one final assignment: to support kids experiencing food insecurity.

The Ottawa Summer Food Drive returned for another year to support the Ottawa Food Bank’s Summer Nutrition Program. The program provides child-friendly snacks and foods to the Ottawa Food Bank network of agencies to help fill the gap left by school meal programs that close over the summer.

Altogether, the Ottawa Summer Food Drive raised over 90,000 pounds of food, bringing the Ottawa Summer Food Drive’s three-year total to 340,000 pounds of food!

This year, students raised approximately 11,000 pounds of food altogether through in-school initiatives that started in mid-May. Khalsa Aid Canada in collaboration with local businesses matched this donation with an additional 79,000 pounds of non-perishable food items from Italfoods and other vendors.

Ottawa Food Bank CEO Rachael Wilson shared, “What makes the Ottawa Summer Food Drive so special is that it brings together so many people, including students who are at the forefront of raising food for us during this food drive.”
