As part of the Ottawa Food Bank network, BGC Ottawa stands as a pillar of support, safety, and fun for children and youth across the city. For over a century, BGC Ottawa has been committed to creating a “home between homes” for over 4,500 kids each year, many from neighbourhoods facing financial hardship.
“Our role is to provide a safe, positive place where kids can feel they belong,” says Paul Beauchamp, Club House Manager of the Don McGahan Clubhouse. “For many families, we’re a critical piece of the puzzle – bridging the gap between home and school with accessible programs that meet a wide range of needs.”
Food insecurity has become an increasingly urgent issue BGC Ottawa has taken on, despite it not being part of their initial mission. With many children and youth arriving after sparse lunches or skipped breakfasts, access to nutritious food has become essential for their well-being. Supported by the Ottawa Food Bank, BGC Ottawa’s meal program now plays a central role in ensuring that kids have the energy and focus they need to thrive. “We’re not mandated to be a food cupboard, but food has become a significant part of what we do. We see firsthand that when kids aren’t getting the nutrition they need, it affects everything – their health, their focus, their happiness,” says Beauchamp.
Beyond providing nutritious meals and snacks, BGC Ottawa’s team connects families with resources and offers critical referrals through a provincial outreach team. This extended support helps families navigate challenges beyond hunger, from access to educational resources to social support, ensuring every child has a network of care.
Despite growing demand and limited budgets, BGC Ottawa staff remain steadfast in their commitment. From sports and art activities to homework help, the team works tirelessly to create a safe space where every child can thrive. “When you’ve got 140 kids here on a Monday afternoon, you know you’re making an impact,” Beauchamp says. “These kids come from diverse backgrounds, but they all deserve a space where they feel supported and can be themselves.”
Looking ahead, BGC Ottawa faces increasing challenges as the cost of operations rises. However, Beauchamp and his team remain dedicated. “There are times you take it home with you, but seeing the smiles on kids’ faces, the gratitude from families – that’s what keeps us going.”
In a city where many children face food insecurity and economic hardship, BGC Ottawa’s Don McGahan Clubhouse remains a crucial lifeline for young people and their families. As Beauchamp puts it, “Kids deserve every opportunity, and with the right support, they can achieve anything.”
