Ramadan (also known as Ramzaan), the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, is upon us. Until approximately March 29, Muslims worldwide will be fasting from sunrise to sunset and partaking in intentional charitable work, as acts of worship and empathy.
While it is traditional to break a fast with a fuller meal, unfortunately, some families may have empty plates this Ramadan. With rising food insecurity across the city, supporting the Ottawa Food Bank and the network is more vital than ever. This Ramadan, there are many ways to give.
1) Donate to Ottawa’s Only Fully-Halal Food Bank
Sadaqa Food Bank, a member agency of the Ottawa Food Bank, is participating in the Ramadan Food Basket Challenge.
Sadaqa Food Bank is a nondenominational community food bank that ensures that food assistance provided to visitors is fully Halal-certified. During Ramadan, they are encouraging supporters to make a basket or box of the most needed items in Ramadan, including dates, chicken, rice, and flour.
2) Join the #Give30 Campaign
Join the fight against hunger by making a donation to Give 30’s Partner Organizations across the country.
Building on the spirit of Ramadan, Give 30 is a volunteer-run movement striving to end hunger across Canada by collecting monetary donations for partnering organizations. The Ottawa Food Bank is honoured to be a beneficiary of this campaign. Monetary donations can be made here until May 30, 2025.
Monetary donations allow the Ottawa Food Bank to purchase food in bulk, allowing your dollar to go further. As demands for food programs continue to rise, community donations like #Give30 support the Ottawa Food Bank’s network of 98 food programs.
3) Participate in #FastFeed
An opportunity to experience fasting for yourself and make a donation to the community.
Led by the Canadian Council of Imams, neighbours of all faiths, who are able and food secure, are encouraged to fast or brown-bag their lunches, and donate savings to local food banks. Learn more here.
4) Donate to the Ottawa Food Bank’s Ramadan Campaign
