School’s out for Summer but Nutrition isn’t: Summer Nutrition Program 2026

Every child deserves access to healthy, nutritious food.

However, the cost of food and housing continues to rise, and more than 1 in 4 families across Ottawa are experiencing food insecurity. In 2025, children made up 37% of food bank clients, as families are being forced to make difficult decisions, sacrificing the quality or quantity of food they purchase, or even skipping meals altogether to stretch their budgets to make ends meet.

Now, the school year has come to an end, and children across Ottawa are getting ready for a summer of activities and fun. Sadly, kids who rely on in-school food programs to get their daily nutrition face uncertainty over the summer break, risking the opportunity to meet their full potential. Children in need of food support today are at a higher risk of developing heart disease, chronic pain, asthma, and depression as a result of experiencing food insecurity. These acute and chronic health consequences are profound and can persist into adulthood – even inadequate food quality can deprive children of the necessary nutrients and micronutrients to function and develop optimally.

Good nutrition and access to healthy food from a young age is crucial in a child’s growth and development. When kids eat well, they do better in school and see life-long positive effects on their overall health, development, and wellbeing.

That is why the Ottawa Food Bank is so proud to announce the kickoff of our Summer Nutrition Program, helping to provide food and sustenance to children, so they have the energy to play outside and enjoy their summer break.

The Summer Nutrition Program runs over 8 weeks during the summer, collaborating with 31 participating agencies, and providing nutritious snacks to over 3,700 children. It is is available to After 4 Programs and Community & Emergency food banks in the network.  We are committed to providing children with nutrition all year round and do so through supplying agencies with easy-to-grab snacks and nourishing food.

Guided by our Registered Dietitian, we only purchase whole-grain and low-sugar options to ensure that the children receive healthy options that provide a variety of nutrients. This includes cereal and milk, yogurt, fresh fruit, fruit squeeze pouches, granola bars, cheese strings, and hummus.

These efforts are not possible without our community. Because of your donations, and continued support, we have the power to shape a healthier future for thousands of children in Ottawa, helping them with the head start they need to reach their full potential.

No child should face food insecurity during their summer break. Thank you for helping us to take care of our children, so we can work together to put an end to the food crisis in our city.

There is no Ottawa Food Bank without Ottawa.
