Summer Lunch Program set to begin

We are excited to launch and begin our revamped Summer Lunch Program.

Summer can be tough for families with kids who are on a very tight budget. Often these children rely on a breakfast or lunch they receive at school. But once the final school bell rings to mark the beginning of summer vacation, those guaranteed meals end.

For years, the Ottawa Food Bank has been providing lunches to summer day camp programs in an effort to reach these children so they don’t go hungry. We want them to have the energy to concentrate on what summer is all about: FUN!

New this summer, our Summer Lunch Program has an incredible food literacy component. Kids at 16 camps across the city will not only receive a healthy meal, but they’ll also learn about what they’re eating, and how to prepare it! We will provide them with everything they need and they will assemble their lunch.

Each week, the day camps will receive a box of fresh items and ingredients, as well as recipes for each day of the week. The kids will be making their own lunches as part of their daily activities at camp and will also receive a fun food-related activity.

Recently, we lost our long-time corporate sponsor for the Summer Lunch Program. We would like to thank Hydro Ottawa for stepping up and helping us partially fund this vital service. We are proud and honoured to have Hydro Ottawa as our Summer Lunch Program sponsor this year.

Please consider making a donation online to help us fund this critical program. Your contribute will truly make a difference for children in our community this summer.
